Who I am

Dustin Sheline: Philadelphia, PA - Pennsylvania, United States; Working in oil, Dustin employs traditional painting techniques with the ultimate goal of achieving a likeness of the world he observes. He feels the only way to reach this goal is to work directly from life. He views the use of photography as a break in the connection between reality and the painter. Dustin offers no judgment on those who work from photos; but rather, he simply acknowledges that in doing so an artist is one step further removed from the subject as opposed to an artist working directly from the subject. His approach as a realist painter, in contrast to the photoist (copying of photos) or photo-realist (observation and photo reference), deals solely with the physical world and direct observation thereof to produce paintings.
