The first phase of the under-painting is complete. I have established the most important lights and darks that will serve as the skeleton when building the body of the painting.
Here I have transfered the pencil drawing onto a canvas with the assistance of tracing paper and conte crayon. Next, I use ink to fix the lines. The fun starts later for those who are ready to dip into the paint.
Here is the ground work for a self portrait I plan to paint. I measured out an 11 x 14 rectangle for this pencil drawing that I will transfer to the canvas.
After establishing the form with light and shadow, I apply a turpentine wash of raw umber to unify the whole. I then build up the lights with flake white.
